Lunch today is at Circle Street New Norfolk. The first comp car is due at 12.26pm

New Norfolk is a town on the Derwent River, in the south-east of Tasmania. It lies 35 km north-west of Hobart on the Lyell Highway.

The town's pioneers were re-settled from Norfolk Island in 1808. They soon farmed the rich land around the town. They introduced hops to the area in 1860 and the plant soon became an important crop. The first road connecting the town to Hobart was built in 1818; the first railway was in 1887. During the 1940s, a newsprint mill was established at nearby Boyer, boosting industry in the local area. The railway is now preserved as the Derwent Valley Railway. For some years after 1848, New Norfolk was the place of exile of the Irish nationalist leader Terence MacManus, where his cottage ("The Grange") still stands. Later he was joined by his fellow Irish rebel William Smith O'Brien.

Longest Targa stage of the event. It can make or break competitors' aspirations to outright victory, category or class wins, or just Targa Trophies. Series of tight corners interspersed by long straights as the course moves through Nelson Valley and Victoria Pass to finish on top of King William Saddle. It is fast and very challenging.

There is a spectator point at 37.52km - STAGE MAP

S34 SHANNONS QUEENSTOWN STAGE - 6.39km
A hill climb up the now disappearing moonscape side of Mount Lyell out of Queenstown. Although the road has been widened and some bends straightened over the past years, the stage is much tougher than it looks, and usually needs to be tacked in second gear all the way up the left-right-left-right climb to the saddle. The run down the other side is a little easier, but still a challenge.

There are spectator points at 3.82km and 4.40km - STAGE MAP

  Sunday April 20, 2008 8.07AM

S33 PURE TASMANIA STRAHAN STAGE - 33.36km
A stage which has many changes of character. There are some fast bits and some very slow bits, over a well made road which is sometimes hard to read. It is an enjoyable roller coaster, with sweeping corners followed by tight esses, together with a few straights and a few off camber corners that catch out the unwary.

There are no official spectator points - STAGE MAP

Later it became two separate towns, Formby on the western side and Torquay on the east. The towns joined to become Devonport in 1890. The eastern side is now called East Devonport. Devonport was declared a city in 1981 by HRH Prince Charles.

TS13 ICS MULTIMEDIA WELDBOROUGH PASS LONG STAGE - 13.20km
One of the best stages over good roads, with a bit of everything - deceptive corners on the 4km uphill run from the start, sweeping corners in the middle, and then a long descent to test the driers courage and the cars brakes and a fast flowing run through farmland to the finish.

There is a spectator point at 4.16km

25 Vehicles have completed Legerwood Stage

  Thurs April 17, 2008 9.46AM

TS12 THRIFTY CAR MOORINA STAGE - 7.70km
A very good stage over a well made road. The short but challenging sharp run requires concentration to stay on the road, for it twists and turns all the way with many long bends. It becomes faster towards the finish.

There are no official spectator points.

25 Vehicles have completed Legerwood Stage

  Thurs April 17, 2008 8.57AM

TS11 BLUEGUM CLOTHING LEGERWOOD STAGE - 5.40km
This is a short fast run through open undulating farming country with many deceptive dips and crests. There are several 90 degree bends all having obstacles in the apex of the corners. Although it looks simple, it needs to be treated with respect.

There are no official spectator points on this stage

  Thurs April 17, 2008 8.45AM

TS10 - TRADING POST SIDELING STAGE - 13.97km
One of the favourites. It is a "fair dinkum" Targa Stage that twists and turns through forestry plantations. The stage is sometimes wet and the many sharp corners require skill in car placement and gear selection. Damp corners are always a problem particularly on the new surface on the downhill run.

There are many spectator points on this stage.

The first competition car started the sideling at 8.28am.

Today the field will head to the east coast; taking in The Sideling, Legerwood, Moorina, Weldborough Pass, Pyengana, Elephant Saddle, Rossarden and Longford. The lunch break today will be at Georges Bay Wharf St Helens. The first Tour Car is due at 9.44am and the first competition car is due at 10.29am.
St Helens is on the north-east coast of Tassie. It lies on the Tasman Highway about 150km East of Launceston. It has a population of around 1300 and was one of the fastest growing areas of the state in the early 2000's. The town was first used as a whaling base in the early 19th century. When tin was discovered in the surrounding area in he 1870s, St Helens became the Shipping port for the mines. Today, St Helens is a popular resort for fishing, swimming and other aquatic activities. It's economy is largely on tourism, fishing and timber.

Also this evening, Craig Wheelie Milich's partner gave birth to a little boy this evening whilst Craig was working on the team cars. How's that for dedication. An addition for the Blue Gum Team!!
  Wed April 16, 2008 10.00PM

On a somber note, past competitor and friend to many of us, Kent Watts (Watsie), passed away this evening at 6.05pm. He will be dearly missed by all. Condolences to his family, we are all thinking of you. xxxx

TS4 - SOUTHERN CROSS PARADISE STAGE - 14.50km
A great rally stage, but quite difficult in places. It starts with a challenging uphill run with several tight and slippery corners then passes through the "Paradise Forest" where there are a number of deceptive bends and long straights. The stage then passes through open farmland where there is a mixture of fast sweeping bends and several very tight and deceptive corners. It is the first competitive stage of the event and will demand total concentration.

Official spectator viewing areas are at 2.95km, 3.96km, 7.63km.

TS3 - PURETASMANIA REEDY MARSH STAGE - 4.99km
A short sharp stage with many fast and deceptive bends. This stage has an easily achievable base time, allowing competitors to learn to read the road without the need to take unnecessary risks. There are no official spectator points on this stage.

20 Vehicles have completed Deloraine Stage

  Wed April 16, 2008 9.34 AM

TS2 - COMMANDER CENTRE DELORAINE STAGE - 8.44km
This stage retains plenty of contrast, with straights to test acceleration and right angled bends to test brakes and handling. Several narrow bridges following bends add to the need for the drive's concentration. As on the previous stage the base time is easily achievable and is set to let the competitors settle in.
There's an official spectator point at 2.51km and 4.50km.

  Wed April 16, 2008 9.04 AM

The aim of the game for the majority of competitors is to get a Targa Trophy. A Targa Trophy is awarded to those competitors that complete all the stages within the set base time. All competitors start the event with a Targa Trophy, it's up to them to keep it! Competitors who achieve a Targa Trophy three years in a row with receive a Gold Targa Trophy. Those those complete a second set of three Targa Trophy wins will receive a Platinum Targa Trophy. Third set of three will receive a Diamond Targa Trophy, Four will receive a Gold Diamond Trophy, Five will receive the Platinum Diamond Trophy. To receive a Platinum Diamond Trophy is a major achievement as this can only be achieved with a minimum of 15 events!!!! The only person to ever receive a Platinum Diamond Trophy was Reg Kenny in 2007. There are only four competitors this year going for Platinum Diamond - Jim Richards, Barry Oliver, Glenn Ridge and Bob Edwards. TROPHIES

  Wed April 16, 2008 8.51 AM
Entally is 5.62km long. There is an official spectator point at 4.98km.
The base time for this stage is easy as the first 3 stages of today are basically for competitors to "get into their groove!".
The base time is the maximum time allowed for a competitor to complete a stage, any time taken over this time is added to the competitors score. ie, if the base time is 3mins and the competitor takes 3mins 10sec, then his "score" for that stage is 10sec. At the end of the event, all the times are added together and the car with the lowest time wins! Time is not deducted for competitors that complete a stage under the base time, so once time is lost, it can not be made up.
