APPAREL

Tasmania’s weather is unpredictable, glorious one day and less so the next. Rain, hail, sunshine or even snow, may be encountered during the six days of Targa Tasmania.

Organisers recommend that you wear ‘peel-off’ clothing while you are officiating on a Targa stage. Be aware that whilst it may be warm during the day, early mornings and late afternoons could be reasonably chilly, so take a jacket with you. If rain is expected, you may like to take a change of clothes to replace those that are likely to get damp (e.g. socks, gloves, hats). Please refer to the checklist below for further details.

Remember that wind will cool the body faster than any other element. If it is windy, wear a hat, gloves and beanie to keep your body warm.

SUN EXPOSURE
UV rays in Tasmania are strong and can burn your skin quickly if you do not apply a sufficient amount of sun block and protective clothing. It is important that while you are officiating on a Targa stage, that you slip, slop and slap to avoid getting sunburnt on those warm Tasmanian afternoons. Please note that UV rays are at their highest between 11am and 4pm. Warning: Extensive sunburn can lead to sunstroke. Carry a bottle of water with you at all times to avoid dehydration.

HYPOTHERMIA
One of the great dangers of winter is hypothermia. While it is unlikely that temperatures in April will reach below zero, it is important that you are aware of the signs, causes and treatment of Hypothermia.

Please note that Hypothermia is not likely to occur in normal healthy people, unless they have consumed alcohol.

Causes & Symptoms:
Those suffering from hypothermia may or may not shiver.
They will become confused, have difficulty in talking and develop a short-term memory. If not treated they will suffer delirium and lose consciousness.
If they have been in a freezing climate, an injured person is especially likely to develop hypothermia
A person who has been lying on the ground (on frost or snow) for any longer than 5 minutes are likely to have developed Hypothermia.

Treatment:
The administration of a warm (not hot) drink - not alcohol
Find shelter from the wind and make every attempt to keep the patient dry and warm – DO NOT apply direct heat (e.g. hot water bottles etc) as these may burn the patient

Prevention Methods:
Always wear warm, wind and waterproof clothing
Wear possible share body heat
Stay nearby shelter
