The Course is out!!

Many of you would say, finally they are going to stop teasing us on the most extensive course change in the history of the event.

The total distance is down over 200k’s but the competitive distance is marginally up even though there are three less stages overall, which means more longer stages.  There are 12 new stages with the highlights being the use of two sections of Cethana in reverse on Day 3 (Mt. Claude & Liena) and two new stages on the way to Strahan on Day 4 (Bastyn Dam & Reece Dam).

The event will have the opportunity for the first time to be won or lost right in Hobart with Risdon Brook (Grasstree Hill Reverse) seeing everyone drop time making the lunch break at New Norfolk a nerve racking time for some before a final hoorah uphill on the Hobart Domain in front of what promises to be a massive crowd.

Recce Notes will be available by the end of this week:

We have been giving you sneak peeks but here it is in full - Course

Speed Restrictions

A subject that is creating a lot of lively discussions, we simply wish to confirm that Targa Tasmania will not be imposing maximum speed restrictions on the 2008 event.

Functions

The functions for the 2008 event have been sorted out and are now on sale.

To ensure that you get to use your complimentary Welcome Party tickets, there will be TWO Welcome Party’s.  The traditional Sunday night function for those who like to party hard and a new Monday night version for those who only arrive on the Monday.

The Presentation Brunch will return and we have negotiated better pricing for this function.  Very limited ticket sales are available to ensure that everyone will get to use their complimentary tickets and not miss out.

The Celebration Dinner returns to its traditional Monday night slot and will see the return of the Blake Report and an extended 10th Anniversary Party Tape with all the best action over the years.  Yes, there will be plenty of time to chat over a wine or seven and the formal dress code will return with everyone having time to get ready.  Tickets are on sale now with discounts offered for tables of 10 and 12 and will be sold on a first in basis until sold out.

With the streamlining of our Corporate Villa’s to just the George Town Prologue, we have included this on the function ticket form for the first time so that you can buy tickets for sponsors, family & friends to watch you in action at George Town in the comfort of the Villa.  One thing is guaranteed, you will be there!!

Order your tickets now so you don’t miss out

Entries

Entries continue to come in as numbers climb past the 250 mark with the Tour at record levels and Classic continuing its resurgence.  With numbers up 30 on last year which was 20 up on 2006, Targa Tasmania 2008 promises to see the largest 5 day field ever assembled.

Remember 300 is the total number of cars we can take due to the length of time we can close the roads so don’t miss out on being the first to try the new course.

Entry List

Classic Handicap Table

All the feedback is in, which surprisingly came from a very small group of competitors.  Just to clarify that with the split in classic we have an opportunity to create two fantastic competitions and this is why it has been changed again.  The plan is to use these tables for the foreseeable future.

A great benefit to the new table is that stages will be harder to clean for everyone, which will provide more competition for everyone, with the split again allowing this to happen.

Some of you suggested that like Classic Adelaide, the Outright should be split and the Handicap all as one.  Surprisingly though, these same people don’t want Targa to become a predominately outright event, which making two of the three competitions outright would do- wouldn’t it?

The Outright Classic competition has been introduced to ensure that the Classic competition receives as much attention as its Modern brother.  Classic is still a handicap competition for the vast majority of you and in having two of the three Classic sections based on Handicap says this loud and clear.

Some of you thought you had been harshly penalised in the new table and from purely a mathematical point of view, they might be but that is because the cars they use to compete against are now in another competition so therefore to create a good competition that will produce a tight finish whilst still rewarding those who prepare and drive their cars to the highest standards, as they should be, this is what we have come up with.

No one wants to win in a canter, you would think and no matter what table we use, Mother Nature can never be factored in and simple mathematics cannot allow for it.

Interestingly, we were told by some of you to do our handicaps like Classic Adelaide and that they have got it right.  Funny thing is though the handicap table they used just last month was………… yep you guessed it- our 2007 table!!!!

Window Banner Buy Back

Classic competitors can now apply to buy back their window banner space if they have a larger sponsor to put in its place.  It is a great way to make your car stand out and give your sponsor some pretty exclusive coverage.

Spots are limited and must be approved.
